How Much Does Salon Software Cost?
What salon software really costs per month: price bands in AUD and USD, vendor prices verified on 1 September 2026, and the fees that quietly add up.
In this guide
Salon software costs between nothing and several hundred dollars a month, and the gap has less to do with quality than with how the vendor charges: flat per plan, per person, per location, per bookable calendar, or free with a commission on the back end. Two salons the same size can easily pay A$25 and A$280.
Every competitor price on this page was read off that vendor's own live pricing page on 1 September 2026, and the source is named beside it. Prices move. Check the vendor's page before you sign anything.
The short answer
A solo operator can run on anything from A$0 to A$90 a month (US$0 to US$180). A team of three pays A$40 to A$140 (US$35 to US$180). A six-person salon pays A$40 to A$280 (US$35 to US$300). The spread at every size comes down to one thing more than any other: whether the vendor charges per person. Phorest and Kitomba do not publish prices at all, so they are not in these bands.
| Team size | Lowest to highest (AUD) | Lowest to highest (USD) |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | A$0 to A$90 | US$0 to US$180 |
| 3 team members | A$40 to A$140 | US$35 to US$180 |
| 6 team members | A$40 to A$280 | US$35 to US$300 |
| 12 team members | A$40 to A$560 | US$49 to US$300 |
Those are the lowest and highest of the published options in the next section, worked out at each team size. The low end of each row is a free tier or a flat plan. The high end is a per-person plan multiplied by your headcount. Neither is hidden: it is on every vendor's pricing page. It just does not show up in the "from A$42" headline.
Compare the same thing
Australian vendors publish some prices including GST and some excluding it, and several US platforms bill Australian salons in USD. Convert everything to one currency, add GST where it is excluded, then compare.

Australia
| Platform | How it charges | Published entry price | What pushes it up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bella Booking | Flat per plan | A$25/month (Solo), inc GST | Moving up a plan for more team members or Professional features |
| Square Appointments | Free tier, then flat per location | A$0, or A$40/location (Plus) | Each extra location; Premium tier at A$90/location |
| Vagaro | Per bookable calendar | A$45/month for 1 bookable calendar | Each additional bookable calendar |
| Timely | Per bookable staff member | A$42/staff (Build), exc GST | Headcount, plan tier, SMS above the allowance |
| Fresha | Per team member, plus marketplace commission | A$44.95 (Independent), exc 10% tax | 20% one-time commission on new marketplace clients, SMS, add-ons |
| Mindbody | Flat per location, three tiers | A$89/month per location (Go) | Moving to Core (A$279) or Growth (A$369); each location |
| Phorest | Quote only | Not published | Add-ons and SMS at 12c or 8.5c per message |
| Kitomba | Quote only | Not published | Package tier, headcount, SMS |
Two of those prices are not what they look like. Fresha states "Rates are exclusive of 10.0% sales tax", so A$44.95 is A$49.45 once GST is on it. Timely shows "Australia (exc GST)", so A$42 per staff member is A$46.20. Bella's AUD prices already include GST, so A$25 is A$25.
Phorest and Kitomba do not publish dollar amounts. Phorest lists five tiers by name (Grow, Complete Advantage, Complete Advantage Plus, Aesthetics Advantage and Aesthetics Advantage Plus) and quotes SMS at 12c on Grow and 8.5c on the others. Kitomba lists four packages by name (Lite PLUS, Grow PLUS, Pro PLUS and Enterprise) and says the price "depends on what package you choose, the features you need, and the number of staff you have". Quote-only is not a red flag on its own, but it does move the work to you: ask for the all-in monthly number in writing, including add-ons, SMS, payment fees and the contract term.
United States
| Platform | How it charges | Published entry price | What pushes it up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bella Booking | Flat per plan | US$25/month (Solo) | Moving up a plan; the Messages Plus add-on |
| Acuity Scheduling | Tiered by calendar count | US$20/month (Starter, 1 calendar) | More calendars: Standard US$34 (6), Premium US$61 (36) |
| Ovatu | Per employee | US$25/month (Neat, first employee) | US$7 per extra employee on Neat; SMS at US$0.04 each |
| Square Appointments | Free tier, then flat per location | US$0, or US$49/location (Square Plus) | Texts beyond 500/month at 3c; Premium at US$149/location |
| GlossGenius | Tiered, flat per plan | US$28/month (Standard) | Gold US$56, Platinum US$168 for teams of 10+; Payroll add-on |
| Mangomint | Base plus per user | US$120/month base plus US$10 per user | Every profile is a billable user; Phone US$70/line; each location US$120 |
| Boulevard | Tiered per location | US$176/month per location (Essentials, annual) | Essentials caps at 5 professionals; Forms from US$65/month |
| Fresha | Per team member, plus marketplace commission | Priced in your local currency at fresha.com/pricing | 20% one-time commission on new marketplace clients, SMS, add-ons |
Boulevard was showing a promotional US$140 for Essentials against a US$176 annual list price when we checked, so the number you see may be lower for a while. GlossGenius and Acuity both discount annual billing (GlossGenius US$24, US$48 and US$148 a month on annual; Acuity US$16, US$27 and US$49). Mangomint counts "anyone with a profile" as a billable user, so a receptionist who never takes a booking still costs US$10 a month.
Prices move
This table is a snapshot taken on 1 September 2026. Salon software pricing changes often, and promotional rates come and go. Read the vendor's own pricing page before you commit, and ask for the all-in monthly figure in writing.
Five things that push the price up
1. Paying per person
This is the single biggest swing. Timely charges per bookable staff member and states that "Part-time staff members are currently charged at the same rate as full-time staff members", so a Saturday-only junior costs the same as your busiest senior. Six team members on Timely Build is 6 x A$42 = A$252 a month excluding GST, which is A$277.20 including it. Mangomint charges US$120 base plus US$10 per user, so six people is US$180. Ovatu charges US$7 per employee beyond the first on Neat. A flat plan does not move at all when you hire.
2. SMS
Reminders cut no-shows, and almost every platform meters them. Fresha includes 20 free automated SMS a month, then charges A$0.06 per text. Timely includes 100, 200 or 350 per staff member depending on plan, then 12c each. Phorest charges 12c on Grow and 8.5c on higher tiers. Square includes 500 texts a month on Plus, then 3c. Ovatu charges US$0.04 per message with none included. If you send two reminders per appointment across 300 appointments, that is 600 messages a month, and the difference between "included" and "12c each" is around A$72.
3. Payment processing and commission
Processing rates cluster fairly tightly. In Australia, Fresha charges 1.59% + A$0.28 online and 1.29% + A$0.26 in person, Timely charges 1.85% + 30c online and 1.59% + 5c in person, Square charges 2.2% online and 1.6% in person, and Bella Booking charges 2.7% + A$0.30 all in (Stripe's 1.7% + A$0.30 plus a 1% platform fee). In the US, Mangomint charges 2.90% + 30c virtual and 2.45% + 15c in person, and GlossGenius charges a flat 2.6%. On A$10,000 a month of card payments, a half-percent difference is A$50, so this axis is worth a look but rarely decides the comparison on its own.
Commission is the bigger number. Fresha charges a "20% one-time commission" on new clients who book through its marketplace, with a "Minimum fee of A$8 per client applies". Ten new marketplace clients at A$120 each is A$240 in a single month. That trade can still be worth making if the marketplace genuinely brings you people you would not otherwise reach. It stops being worth it once clients you already had start booking through it.
4. Add-ons and tier gates
The plan you price is rarely the plan you need. Fresha sells Client Loyalty at A$89.95 per location per month and an AI Concierge at A$229.95. Boulevard sells Forms from US$65 per location per month and a QuickBooks integration at US$45. Mangomint sells Phone at US$70 per line, Marketing from US$30 and Payroll at US$50 plus US$8 per worker. Phorest sells two-way SMS, memberships, a branded booking app and accounting integrations as separate add-ons. Price the tier that includes everything on your actual list, then add the add-ons, then compare.
5. Locations, contracts and tax
Square, Boulevard, Mangomint, Mindbody and GlossGenius all charge per location at close to full price, so a second site roughly doubles the bill. Annual billing saves money at the vendors that offer it (Boulevard 10%, GlossGenius 12% to 14%, Acuity 20%) and commits you before you know whether the software fits. And in Australia the tax basis differs between vendors: add 10% to anything published excluding GST before you compare it to a GST-inclusive price.
The same salon, three ways
Six team members, 300 appointments a month, two SMS reminders each. Timely Build at A$42 per staff excluding GST comes to A$277.20 including GST, plus anything above the SMS allowance. Fresha Team at A$29.95 per member excluding tax comes to A$197.70 including GST, plus processing and 20% on every new marketplace client. A flat plan at A$99 including GST comes to A$99, and it is still A$99 when the seventh person starts.
Free versus paid
Genuinely free salon software exists. Square Appointments has a free plan for a single location, and Setmore has a free plan for "Up to 4 users". Both are real products, not trials.
What free buys you is narrower than it looks. On Setmore's free plan, SMS reminders, deposits, recurring appointments and removing Setmore branding all sit on the paid plan. Square's free plan covers one location and includes text and email reminders, while marketing texts, extra locations and lower processing rates sit on Plus and Premium. Free software works. The test is whether it works without the handful of things that protect your revenue: deposits, SMS reminders and your own branding on the booking page.
The marketplace model is often described as low-cost, and it is worth pricing carefully. Fresha charges a subscription and a 20% one-time commission on new marketplace clients on top of it. A quiet month costs little. A busy month costs a lot, so the bill climbs precisely when the business is going well.
When free is the right answer
- •You are the only person taking bookings and you are testing whether online booking suits your clients at all.
- •Email reminders are enough, because your clients read email and your no-show rate is already low.
- •You do not take deposits and do not need to.
- •You can accept the platform's branding on your booking page for now.
When it stops being the right answer
- •You hire a second person and the free plan caps users or locations.
- •No-shows start costing more per month than a paid plan would.
- •You want deposits or a cancellation fee, which usually sit behind the paywall.
- •New-client commission starts costing you more each month than a flat subscription would.
Ask before you build
Whichever way you go, ask about data export before you load two years of client history in. You should be able to leave with your clients, their notes and their appointment history in a usable file.
Where Bella Booking sits
Bella Booking is flat per plan, from A$25 to A$99 a month in Australia (US$25 to US$99 elsewhere). AUD prices include GST. The plan you need is decided by team size and by a handful of Professional-only capabilities, not by booking volume.
| Plan | Price (AUD, inc GST) | Price (USD) | Team members | SMS included |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solo | A$25/month | US$25/month | 1 | 50/month |
| Starter | A$67/month | US$67/month | Up to 3 | 200/month |
| Professional | A$99/month | US$99/month | Unlimited | 500/month |
- •There is no commission on bookings, on any plan.
- •The team member count is per location, and counts only people who are on the scheduler or bookable online. An admin-only login does not count towards the limit.
- •Payments run through Stripe on every plan. In Australia that is Stripe's 1.7% + A$0.30 plus Bella's 1% platform fee, so 2.7% + A$0.30 all in. In the US it is 2.9% + $0.30 plus 1%, so 3.9% + $0.30. You can optionally pass processing fees to clients as a visible line item, though Australian businesses lose that option on 1 October 2026 when the RBA surcharging ban takes effect (Bella switches it off automatically).
- •One add-on exists: Messages Plus at A$49 a month, which adds a dedicated business number, two-way SMS, campaigns and 100 extra SMS credits. Automated reminders and confirmations do not need it.
- •SMS above your plan allowance is topped up with credit packs of 200, 500 or 1,000. Current prices are on /pricing.
- •Monthly billing with no lock-in contract, an optional annual price on Professional, and a 14-day free trial with no credit card.
- •Free 1-on-1 onboarding and free data migration on Starter and Professional.
What that does not include
There is no free plan, only the 14-day trial. Annual billing is Professional only: A$950 a year against A$1,188 paid monthly, a saving of A$238, or 20%. Solo and Starter are monthly, with no annual option. And a real list of capabilities sits on Professional rather than on every tier: gift cards, memberships, prepaid packages, client credit, digital forms and intake, treatment plans, the loyalty programme, client reviews, service add-ons, attendance tracking, advanced reports, API and MCP access, and multiple locations. If your list includes forms and memberships, price Professional at A$99, not Solo at A$25.
Bella also does not sell its own card terminal yet. You can take online payments, deposits and saved-card charges on every plan, and record payments taken on your own EFTPOS machine against the sale, but a terminal wired into the calendar is not available today.
Current prices for your region are on the Bella Booking pricing page, and the related guides and comparisons below give side-by-side cost workings against Timely, Fresha and Mindbody.
Work out your own number
Do this once, on paper, for the two or three platforms on your shortlist. It takes about ten minutes.
- 1Write down the tier that includes every feature on your list, not the cheapest tier on the page.
- 2Multiply by headcount if the vendor charges per person, and use the team you expect in 12 months, not today's.
- 3Add each extra location at whatever the vendor charges for it.
- 4Add SMS: appointments per month x reminders per appointment, minus the included allowance, x the per-message rate.
- 5Add the add-ons you will actually switch on.
- 6Add processing: monthly card revenue x the rate, plus the fixed fee per transaction.
- 7Add commission: new marketplace clients per month x average spend x the commission rate.
- 8In Australia, add 10% GST to anything published excluding it; elsewhere check whether sales tax applies. Convert foreign currency at today's rate plus a buffer.
The total at step 8 is your real monthly cost. Run it twice, once at your current size and once at the size you are aiming for, because that is where per-person and flat pricing separate.
Five questions worth asking every vendor
- •Is this price per person, per location or per plan, and are part-time and admin-only people charged?
- •How many SMS are included, and what is the rate above that?
- •Is there any commission on bookings, and does it apply to returning clients?
- •Which of the features I listed are add-ons or higher tiers, and what do they cost?
- •Is the price GST inclusive, and which currency will I be billed in?

Frequently asked questions
How much does salon software cost per month?
Anything from A$0 to about A$560 a month across the platforms in this guide, depending on how the vendor charges and how many people you pay for. As of 1 September 2026, published entry prices in Australia run from A$0 (Square Appointments free plan) through A$25 (Bella Booking Solo, inc GST), A$42 per staff member excluding GST (Timely Build), A$44.95 excluding 10% tax (Fresha Independent), A$45 per bookable calendar (Vagaro) and A$89 per location (Mindbody Go). In the US the same band runs from US$0 through US$20 (Acuity Starter), US$25 (Bella Solo and Ovatu Neat), US$28 (GlossGenius Standard), US$49 per location (Square Plus), US$120 base plus US$10 per user (Mangomint) and US$176 per location (Boulevard Essentials, annual).
What is the cheapest salon software?
Free, if a free plan covers what you need. Square Appointments has a free plan for a single location and Setmore has one for up to four users. Among the paid platforms we checked on 1 September 2026, the lowest published entry prices were Acuity at US$20 a month for one calendar, and Bella Booking and Ovatu at US$25 (A$25 for Bella in Australia, including GST). Cheapest at one person is not cheapest at six: per-person plans overtake flat plans quickly as you hire.
Is free salon software worth it?
It is worth it while you are testing online booking on your own, with low volume and no need for deposits. It stops being worth it when the free plan caps users or locations, when SMS reminders and deposits sit behind the paywall, or when a marketplace commission on new clients starts costing more per month than a subscription would. Work out the total including commission before assuming free is cheaper.
Why does per-staff pricing cost so much more?
Because it multiplies. Timely publishes A$42 per bookable staff member per month excluding GST on Build, and states that part-time staff are charged at the same rate as full-time, so six team members is A$252 excluding GST (A$277.20 including). Mangomint charges US$120 base plus US$10 for anyone with a profile, front desk included. A flat plan does not change when you hire, which is why the two models diverge sharply above three or four people.
How much does Bella Booking cost?
A$25 a month for Solo (1 team member, 50 SMS), A$67 for Starter (up to 3 team members, 200 SMS) and A$99 for Professional (unlimited team members, 500 SMS). AUD prices include GST; the same figures apply in USD elsewhere. There is 0% commission on bookings, one optional add-on (Messages Plus at A$49 a month, which includes 100 SMS credits), monthly billing with no lock-in contract, an optional annual price on Professional (A$950 a year, a saving of A$238), and a 14-day free trial with no credit card. Payment processing in Australia is 2.7% + A$0.30 all in. Current prices are on /pricing.
Do salon software prices include GST in Australia?
It varies, and it matters. Fresha states "Rates are exclusive of 10.0% sales tax" and Timely shows "Australia (exc GST)", so their published figures are 10% lower than what you pay. Bella Booking publishes AUD prices including GST. Several US-built platforms bill Australian salons in USD, so your cost also moves with the exchange rate. Normalise every quote to AUD including GST before comparing.
Key takeaways
- ✓A solo operator pays A$0 to A$90 a month; a six-person salon pays A$40 to A$280, and the spread is mostly about whether the vendor charges per person.
- ✓Timely is A$42 per bookable staff member excluding GST and charges part-timers at the full rate; Fresha is A$44.95 excluding 10% tax plus a 20% one-time commission on new marketplace clients (minimum A$8). Both verified 1 September 2026.
- ✓SMS, payment processing, add-ons, extra locations and GST treatment routinely add more than the difference between two subscriptions.
- ✓Free plans are real (Square Appointments, Setmore) but usually exclude deposits, SMS reminders or your own branding.
- ✓Bella Booking is flat from A$25 to A$99 a month including GST, with 0% booking commission, one add-on, no lock-in contract and an optional annual price on Professional (A$950 a year, a saving of A$238). Gift cards, memberships, packages, forms, loyalty and multi-location are Professional only.
- ✓Calculate the all-in monthly total at the team size you expect in 12 months, not the headline price at the size you are today.
